The Associated Press

11/6/2008

CROWN POINT, Ind. — Local governments in northwestern Indiana are seeking more than $4 million in federal aid to repair bridges, roads and other structures damaged by flooding in September.

President Bush declared a federal disaster area because of flooding that began Sept. 14.

Officials from Lake and Porter county communities attended a meeting Wednesday with state and federal emergency management officials on how to file claims for assistance.

Munster is seeking more than $2 million for debris cleanup, emergency protective measures and building repairs.

The Lake County Highway Department says it needs $945,000, including $425,000 to repair a bridge over the Grand Calumet River.

Homeowners and small businesses also may qualify for aid.
