CHICAGO — With the naming today of former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack to be agriculture secretary and Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar to lead the Interior Department, the number of unfilled seats in the proposed Cabinet of President-elect Obama are dwindling.

One of those is the position of transportation secretary, and no timetable has been forthcoming on that announcement.

According to the Associated Press, only four spots remained to be filled — CIA director, national intelligence director, labor secretary and transportation secretaries.

Four names continue to be listed as transportation secretary candidates.

They include Jane Garvey, former head of the Federal Aviation Administration, Mortimer Downey, for deputy transportation secretary, Steve Heminger, executive director of the San Francisco Bay area transportation commission, and Ron Kirk, former Dallas mayor.

Kirk is the latest to join the list, telling the Fort Worth Star-Telegram earlier this week that he was in the vetting process.
