OCCOQUAN, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation will begin work this week to widen a six-mile stretch of Interstate 95 in Fairfax and Prince William counties.
VDOT says a fourth lane in both directions between the Fairfax County Parkway and Route 123 will improve traffic at the Springfield Interchange.
Signs and barriers will be placed on the right shoulders in both directions along that stretch of the interstate Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Construction on the $123 million project is scheduled to begin next month and finish in 2011.
Transportation officials say they plan to minimize traffic congestion by keeping all existing lanes open during rush hours and holidays.
