Truck accident damages bridge; driver killed

The Associated Press

2/5/2008

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — The southbound lane of Interstate 91 is reopen again near the site of an accident Tuesday morning in Brattleboro that killed a trucker when his vehicle went through bridge guardrail and burst into flames when it hit the ground below.

Vermont Transportation Agency officials say the flames did not do any structural damage to the bridge, but the accident destroyed about 130 feet of guardrail in the northbound lane.

As soon as state police investigators give the word, work crews will open one lane of the northbound bridge until the guardrails have been repaired.

Police have not yet released the name of the truck driver.
