BALTIMORE — The Maryland Transportation Authority says a malfunctioning axle-counting device mistakenly overcharged some E-ZPass users at Baltimore's Fort McHenry Tunnel.
The agency is reviewing transactions that took place while the equipment was malfunctioning in December and will credit accounts when appropriate.
Spokeswoman Kelly Melhem says the device appears to have caused "a couple thousand" overcharges. A similar malfunction at the Bay Bridge in October was blamed for about 1,000 overcharges.
Melhem says the devices have been replaced and the agency has boosted monitoring of the equipment to prevent future problems.
