Long delays expected for weekend I-17 closures

The Associated Press

3/12/2008

PHOENIX — State transportation officials are warning drivers of long delays on Interstate 17 north of Phoenix this weekend because of work to demolish a highway bridge.

The main route between Phoenix and Flagstaff will be closed in both directions at the Carefree Highway from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday as workers demolish a highway bridge. Traffic will be routed off the highway and then back onto entrance ramps.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is predicting 90 minute delays for travelers.

ADOT is demolishing the old Carefree Highway bridge over I-17 to make way for a larger overpass.

Drivers are encouraged to consider alternate routes, including New River Road.
