MUNFORDVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky State Police on Wednesday were investigating two accidents — one of which claimed 5 lives — in the vicinity of Munfordville, Ky., on Interstate 65 south of Louisville.

Five people reportedly were killed in a crash of three vehicles, including one 18-wheeler, about 7:30 a.m. during a heavy rain storm, according to KSP Trooper Todd Holder.

He said that crash happened in the southbound lane near mile marker 61.

The lane was still blocked in that area late this morning, according to one driver in the area who contacted The Trucker by telephone.

The other two vehicles involved were a pickup truck and a minivan, Holder said. No other information about the accident or the victims was immediately available.

An undisclosed number of injuries were reported as a result of the first accident about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday. That accident closed the northbound lanes of the highway.

KSP officials said a crude oil spill is believed to have caused the mishap. Details regarding injuries were being withheld.

Northbound motorists were being detoured from the Horse Cave exit at the 58-mile marker, then to Kentucky 218 to U.S. 31 north to Kentucky 728 in Bonnieville then back to I-65.
