LOUISVILLE, Ky. —  Carrier Transicold’s 2008 trailer product line-up, showcased at the 2008 Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville this week, offers better fuel efficiency and lower sound output than previous models, company officials stated. The units also feature engines that significantly surpass U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) interim Tier 4 standards (Tier 4i) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions requirements. Carrier Transicold is part of Carrier Corp., a business unit of United Technologies Corp.

“Carrier solutions allow an environmentally conscious trucker or fleet owner to satisfy EPA and CARB minimums and to achieve the best overall particulate matter reduction,” said David Kiefer, product manager, Trailer Products.

With a threshold of 0.3 grams per kilowatt-hour (g/kwh), the Tier 4i standard lowers emissions by 50 percent for trailer refrigeration units with 25-50 horsepower engines compared with the preceding EPA engine standard. Carrier units reduce particulate emissions 30 percent beyond the EPA standard, driving particulate emissions to only 0.214 g/kwh. That’s also 20 percent lower than competitive units with Tier 4i-compliant engines.

In addition, Carrier’s Tier 4i engines emit 19 percent less combined NOx (nitrogen oxides) and hydrocarbons than the EPA threshold, according to a Carrier news release.

As a result of various improvements, the engines are 1 percent to 2 percent more fuel efficient and quieter than Carrier’s previous engines.

“Better fuel economy plus improved emissions and lower noise add up to a significant green benefit for customers,” said Kiefer.

The Tier4i engines are common to the models 2100, 2100A and 2500A from Carrier’s X2 Series, as well as the Ultima, Ultra and Genesis models.
