PHILADELPHIA — Signs have been posted along major routes in the Philadelphia area to help motorists find their way through detours.
The signs are the work of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
PennDOT spokesman Charles Metzger says they will help in the event that roads like the Schuylkill Expressway or Interstate 95 are closed by weather, accidents or other emergencies.
The signs have arrows that indicate detours based on four colors: blue, red, green and orange.
Motorists will be directed off at the nearest interchange, then will follow the colored detour route to get around the blocked area and back onto the main highway.
Drivers will be alerted by broadcast traffic reports and electronic signs.
Some 400 detour signs are already up and more are on the way.
