Virginia transportation authority votes to begin refunds

The Associated Press

3/7/2008

FAIRFAX, Va. — The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority has voted to begin refunding as much as $12 million collected in taxes and fees since January.

The authority also is repealing a decision to increase taxes and fees to raise $300 million a year for Metro, Virginia Railway Express and regional road and transit projects.

Thursday's votes come after the Virginia Supreme Court ruled last week that the authority's taxing ability is unconstitutional.

The authority expects it can track most who are owed refunds and is developing plans to return money to those who might be difficult to find. By law, the authority must hold unclaimed funds for three years.

The transportation authority is urging state lawmakers to find a new way to fund transportation projects.
