SAN MATEO, Calif. — Con-way Inc. has been named by Human Resource Executive magazine to its 2007 Top 50 Most Admired Companies list based on the findings of Hay Group, the consulting firm responsible for analyzing the rankings for Fortune magazine’s Most Admired Companies list.

Hay Group conducts an independent analysis of the rankings of Fortune’s list and recalibrates them based on specific human resource-related measures known as “attributes of reputation.” To be named to Human Resource Executive’s list, companies must demonstrate that their board of directors is actively engaged with management in the development of human capital initiatives.

Through its analysis of the list, Hay Group found a correlation between companies that are recognized as the most admired among their peers and companies that regularly report on human capital performance metrics and receive guidance from their boards on human capital management strategy.

“Con-way’s board of directors has been highly supportive of the company’s efforts to build a foundation of progressive human capital management programs and instill a culture that recognizes and rewards employee initiative, leadership and excellence,” said Leslie Lundberg, vice president of human resources for Con-way Inc. “It’s an honor for our human resources team - and our professional practices and programs - to be ranked among the best in the nation.”

In 1998, Con-way’s executives sought to benchmark its practices against those of other world-class organizations. Through this process, opportunities to increase customer satisfaction and enhance employee engagement were identified, the company said.

A group was formed with the initial focus on creating three elements that are considered the bedrock of Con-way’s culture today: a set of core operating values, a mission statement and an employee recognition program.

Since that time, Con-way reports the company has continued to enhance and refine its approach to employee engagement through the creation of a values task force and annual “Keeping the Dream Alive” events to re-energize the commitment to Con-way’s values.

Other companies named to Human Resource Executive’s 2007 Most Admired list include Procter & Gamble, Network Appliance, Google, Herman Miller, Starbucks, Walt Disney, Nike and Cisco Systems.

Con-way Inc. is a $4.7 billion freight transportation and logistics services company headquartered in San Mateo, Calif. Its three primary operating companies are Con-way Freight, Con-way Truckload and Menlo Worldwide Logistics.
