KENLY, N.C. — Authorities have evacuated several homes and a truck stop and five other businesses along Interstate 95 near Kenly after a truck began leaking a chemical.

WRAL-TV reported the leak occurred about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at a tractor trailer at the TA Truck Stop at exit 106 on the highway.

The station reported a hazardous material team from Raleigh was called to assess the situation.

There was a vapor cloud around the truck. The driver was taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital. There was no immediate word on his condition.

Several homes in the area were evacuated and a shelter was set up at North Johnston Middle School.

No other injuries were reported.

WRAL says the chemical is silicon tetrafluoride, a colorless gas with a pungent odor. Authorities say it can cause respiratory problems.
