ALMA, Ark. — Arkansas highway police stopped a shipment of cocaine July 19 they say was worth more than $4 million.
During an inspection of a tractor-trailer rig at the Alma Highway Police Station on Interstate 40, police found 440 pounds of cocaine in the truck, according to a news release from the Arkansas Highway Police Division.
The driver, Iver Lopez, 54, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., was arrested on drug charges and a motor vehicle violation, the release said. He was jailed in the Crawford County Detention Center, and is to be arraigned Wednesday.
The truck, which was hauling produce, was believed to be traveling from Bakersfield, Calif., to Elkton, Md. Highway Police Chief Ron Burks said the drug seizure represented the largest discovery of illegal drugs by the division this year.
"This is the largest discovery of illicit drugs by our officers this year, and one of the largest in the history of the agency, both in terms of quantity and street value," he said.
