LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Trailer maker Wabash National Corp. is switching its production to a four-day work week schedule effective July 21.

The change is due to rising gas prices and the number of employees who drive to work from surrounding counties, the company said.

“We have not only noticed the effect that the cost of fuel has had on our core business, but also its impact on the associates who work here,” said Ron Pitrelli, vice president of human resources. “We hope that this change will alleviate some of the financial demands the current economy holds on our associates.”

Under the new schedule, about 2,000 production workers will work 10-hour shifts four times a week. There will be two production shifts per day Monday through Thursday.

Company officials said the new work schedule will remain in place as long as it meets demand.

Wabash National employee Luis Cruz liked the idea.

“I live in Delphi, so I drive around 50 miles to and from work a day,” he said. “This new work schedule will help me save some more money, and give me more time with my family. I am really excited about this.”
