WASHINGTON — Members of the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) are teaming up with local law enforcement, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the International Association of Police Chiefs, MADD and other organizations to increase enforcement of impaired driving during the Drunk Driving Over the Limit Under Arrest crackdown Aug. 15-Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 1).

According to GHSA, in 2006, more than 13,000 people died in highway crashes involving a driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher.

The end of the summer has the potential to be one of the most deadly times on our roadways, the association said.

The impaired driving campaign is designed to combat this trend.

This year’s effort is supported by $11 million in paid-national advertising to help put everyone on notice that if they are caught driving impaired, they will be arrested. Additional states have also committed significant amounts of money for advertising.

New this year, the national ad will include a scene to deter motorcycle riders from driving drunk. For information on what states plan to do during the campaign week, click here.
