ELYRIA, Ohio — SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) by Bendix CVS is now available to fleets through the broad network of Bendix OES and independent aftermarket partners across North America, the company has announced.

SmarTire monitors the pressure and temperature of each tire on a commercial vehicle to provide real-time tire status information to the driver or maintenance technician. It also warns the driver of tire-related problems before they become dangerous, according to Fred Andersky, Bendix director of marketing for controls.

SmarTire reads pressure and temperature information from inside the tire and communicates wirelessly to an on-board receiver, which forwards the information to an easy-to-read, multifunction, two-inch display installed on the vehicle dash, he said.

The display alerts the driver to loss of air pressure or high tire temperature and provides pressure information to maintenance personnel.

Keeping commercial vehicle tires at proper inflation levels can deliver fuel savings, as well as reduce tire wear and help ensure the proper performance of active safety technologies such as Bendix ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and Bendix Wingman ACB – Active Cruise with Braking when needed, the company said.

“Tires and fuel are major cost factors for fleets and owner operators — and the first step to reducing tire-related costs and improving fuel economy is to make sure tires are at their optimum inflation level,” Andersky said “The temperature-compensated tire pressure deviation reported by the system ensures that maintenance teams and drivers always know the tire pressure. And they can maintain it at any time, whether the tire is hot or cold. Plus, the system is easily retrofitted for almost any commercial vehicle, so fleets and owner operators alike can start improving ROI immediately. When you consider the savings in fuel, maintenance and tire wear, the system can pay for itself in as little as eight months.”

Along with helping improve fuel economy, keeping tires properly inflated provides a safety dividend, he added.

“Braking technologies, including ABS, Traction Control, ESP and Wingman ACB rely on properly maintained and inflated tires to ensure optimal system performance,” Andersky said noting that according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration properly maintained and performing tires aid drivers in preventing and mitigating crash situations.

“This is a great product for both independent and OE aftermarket distribution,” Andersky said. “The product is sold as a complete kit, giving the fleet or owner operator everything needed to easily, quickly, and economically retrofit the system on almost any commercial vehicle pplication.“
