CHARLOTTE, NC — An Evans Delivery Co. independent contractor became a crime stopper on Nov. 17 when he was able to maneuver his cab to stop a suspected bank robber.

On his way to pick up a container, driver Nereonar Jackson observed the suspect driving erratically. He became aware that the North Carolina Highway Patrol was following the car on Interstate 85. Jackson received a radio message sent to all truckers in the area asking for help, but Jackson did not see any other trucks on the road.

He crossed several lanes of traffic, positioned his truck in the fast lane in front of the suspect and slowed to a speed that allowed the state troopers to block the car and arrest the man. Along the way, the suspected bank robber was tossing money out of his car. At times, the high-speed chase exceeded 100 miles an hour, according to a news release.

Nicole Herriven, Evans' dispatcher and operations, said they were told the suspect was armed. Once he observed the police were in control, Jackson continued on to pick up the customer's cargo.

An Evans' driver for five years, Jackson took the entire episode as just part of a day's work and part of the truckers' brotherhood of the road.

"Nereonar exemplifies what a person who makes his living on the highways of America should do," said Kim Lorimer, vice president of safety and compliance for the Evans Network of Companies. "They look out for each other, for other vehicles and also become watchdogs for safety and security. We are very proud of him."
