RANCHO DOMINGUEZ, Calif. — Operators of small trucking companies who are concerned about a proposal they say will double California's excise tax on fuel and will add billions to fuel and transportation costs are planning a protest today at noon at Golden State Logistics here.

Scheduled speakers include:  Fred Johring of Golden State Logistics; Mike Lightman of Harbor Truckers for Sustainable Future LA/LB; Rick Lorenzen of Price Transfer; Joshua Owen of Ability Tri-Modal; and Patty Senecal of the International Warehouse Logistics Association (IWLA).

The Tax Commission later in the week will unveil its recommendations for reforming California's dysfunctional budget and finance system and is expected to propose massive increases in gasoline and diesel taxes, a news release from the group states.

“This multi-billion dollar tax increase will put California's goods movement companies at an even greater competitive disadvantage with out-of-state businesses not burdened with our state's high taxes and costly regulations,” according to the release from the West State Alliance, a goods movement coalition. Their mission is to “support the successful transition of the transportation sector to a low carbon economy.”

The group said it advocates for permanent, technologically feasible, verifiable, cost-effective initiatives “and opposes initiatives that cause leakage of jobs and industries to other regions. The multi-billion dollar fuel tax increase will hurt businesses, cost jobs, and drive consumer prices higher.”
