On-highway diesel drops 3.6 cents; below $4 a gallon first time since mid November

At-the-pump diesel dropped 3.6 cents today compared with Dec. 3 prices as reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration of the federal Department of Energy, making the first time since Nov. 19 that diesel has dipped below the $4-a-gallon mark. It came in at $3.991 a gallon compared with $4.027 last week.

The price was $3.976 and $3.980 a gallon on Nov. 19 and Nov. 12, respectively.

Put in a different perspective, however, diesel was still up 9.7 cents from this same time a year ago.

And five reporting areas were still above the $4-a-gallon threshold.

Those were: the East Coast, down 2.7 cents to $4.069; the New England region, down 4.6 cents from last week but at $4.175; the Central Atlantic reporting sector down 2.8 cents at $4.174; the West Coast, down 6.4 cents but at $4.042; and California, which dropped 4.6 cents but was still hovering above the $4-a-gallon mark at $4.093.
