ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Nearly 3,000 Ann Arbor, Mich., vehicles will participate in a year-long research effort involving vehicle-to-vehicle and other intelligent transportation technology, the U.S. Department of Transportation has announced.
It’s the largest-ever road test of vehicle-to-vehicle crash avoidance technology, according to DOT.

The effort will test a Wi-Fi-like technology that allows vehicles and highway infrastructure to “talk” to each other to help reduce crashes and improve traffic congestion.
The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) will conduct the year-long project in Ann Arbor where nearly 3,000 cars, trucks and buses equipped with vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication devices will “talk” to each other and to highway infrastructure to prevent crashes, according to a DOT news release.
