2012 Class 8 truck sales fall short of 200K mark at 194,715

Sales of Class 8 trucks in the United States failed to reach the 200,000 mark for the sixth consecutive year with final 2012 total sales of 194,715 as reported by Ward’s Automotive.

Many industry stakeholders had predicted that 2012 would be the year U.S. sales reached the coveted 200,000-plus mark and the numbers were headed in that direction until talk about the fiscal cliff headed up during the early stages of the presidential race in the fall and September sales plummeted 12.2 percent, in effect derailing the 200K train.

Evidence of that fact can be reached by reviewing at least two factors:

•December 2012 sales of 18,130 declined 13.4 percent over December 2011 when 10,939 trucks were sold.

• November/December sales in 2012 of 32,500 represented a 28.8 percent decline from the same two-month period last year.

Sales in 2012 were up 13.6 percent over the 2011 total of 171,358 and were the most since the banner year of 2006 when 284,008 trucks were sold.

It was 81.7 percent higher than 2010 when sales reached 107,152.

Freightliner was again the leading seller of Class 8 trucks and increased its annual market share to 32.9 percent from 30.5 percent in 2011.

Others increasing market share in 2012 were Mack Trucks (up 1.4 percent to 8.9 percent to 8.9 percent), Kenworth up 1.1 percent to 14.3 percent) and Western Star (up one tenth of one percent to 1.3 percent).

Only International failed to sell as many Class 8 trucks in 2012 as it did in 2011, resulting in a 3.1 percent drop in annual market share.
