TIVERTON, R.I. — Motorists without E-ZPass transponders who cross the Sakonnet River Bridge more than 25 times will soon have their toll bill mailed to them.
WJAR-TV reports(http://bit.ly/19i1qZM ) that the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority board voted in favor of the new policy on Wednesday.
Previously, the authority had no means of collecting the 10-cent toll from drivers who don't have an E-ZPass.
The authority had initially planned to institute a higher toll. Cameras would record the license plates of those cars without transponders and their drivers would be billed through the mail. But that plan was shelved when lawmakers voted to cap the toll at 10 cents.
Drivers with E-ZPass transponders are billed automatically when they use the bridge, which connects Portsmouth and Tiverton.
