CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — A woman and a child died Tuesday when an SUV crashed into the back of tractor-trailer on Interstate 5 near San Onofre State Beach.

The northbound Chevrolet Suburban carrying the victims smashed into the Ralphs supermarket truck about half a mile south of the San Clemente Border Patrol Station in the Camp Pendleton area about 9:20 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

No other injuries were reported.

Helicopter video showed the SUV wedged underneath the left rear corner of the Ralphs truck. The truck was stopped in the right emergency lane of the freeway.

The collision left all northbound lanes in the area blocked for a time, causing gridlock for miles to the south. By 11:30 a.m., two lanes were open again, though a congestion alert for the area remained in effect, the CHP reported.

The victims’ names were not immediately available.
