PORTLAND, Ore. — Authorities closed much of Interstate 84 in Eastern Oregon on Tuesday as trucks jack-knifed in the packed snow on the Eastern Oregon grade known as Cabbage Hill and backed up traffic in the region.
A spokesman for the Oregon Department of Transportation, Tom Strandberg, said that, as of noon, the westbound lanes of the freeway were closed between Pendleton and Ontario, the eastbound lanes between Pendleton and La Grande.
When a section of the interstate closes in Eastern Oregon, trucks and vehicles soon fill up parking space at interchanges. That's what led the department Tuesday to close the westbound lanes all the way to Ontario.
