Stone County says port haulers damaging roads

The Associated Press

5/10/2013

GULFPORT, Miss. — Stone County officials said trucks hauling material to the Port of Gulfport are causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in road damage.

County officials went before port commissioners this week, asking them to pay part of the repair bill because they don't have enough money to fix the roads.

County officials said the heavy traffic comes from trucks hauling material from a sand pit to the Port of Gulfport.

WLOX reports (http://bit.ly/132q101 ) that county engineer Jon Bond suggested a port contractor who hauls the material should be charged for road repairs.

The interim port director said he doesn't understand how one contractor's trucks can be singled out. Stone County officials said they are confident of the cause.

Commissioners said they would consider the county request.
