Traffic death tally to be broadcast on billboards

The Associated Press

RENO, Nev. — The Nevada Department of Transportation plans to start displaying tallies of the state's traffic deaths on digital billboards in hopes of pushing safer driving.

NDOT spokeswoman Meg Ragonese told the Reno Gazette-Journal ( ) the program will start Wednesday in Washoe County partly because of a spike in traffic deaths there in 2013, and partly because of logistics.

Ragonese says there have been nine Washoe County road deaths so far this year, compared with four at the same time last year.

The displays will show up on digital message boards near roadways. The numbers will rotate with other messages to drivers.

Similar displays are expected in other corners of the state in coming weeks.
