PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Top state lawmakers in Rhode Island want to delay tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge.

The proposal would halt the implementation of tolls on the new bridge pending a study on the use of tolls.

House Finance Chair Helio Melo announced the proposal Tuesday as the House began debate on an $8.2 million state budget.

The House plans to vote on the proposal late Tuesday night.

State transportation officials planned to begin tolls on the new bridge next month. They say the tolls are needed to fund bridge maintenance.

Residents and business owners in the East Bay say the tolls would be a burden and could hurt tourism on Aquidneck Island.
