Portion of LA's I-5 to remain closed after fire

The Associated Press

7/15/2013

LOS ANGELES — Traffic is expected to snarl Monday morning as a section of Interstate 5 near downtown Los Angeles remains closed while workers race to repair a tunnel-like underpass damaged by fire.

California Department of Transportation spokesman Patrick Chandler said all northbound lanes of the freeway will remain closed until Tuesday, as will two southbound lanes at the underpass connecting I-5 and State Route 2.

The lanes were closed since a tanker truck flipped and sent its 8,500-gallon load of gasoline into the Los Angeles River and underground systems.

Saturday's fire was so intense it rendered the structure's concrete brittle. Chandler said repairs will be quite extensive and urged commuters to avoid the area and take public transit Monday.
