Man sent to prison in fatal distracted driving crash

The Associated Press

VERNAL, Utah — An eastern Utah man who told police he was distracted by his phone when he fatally hit a teenager in Vernal last fall has been sentenced to prison.

The Deseret News reports 29-year-old Jeffery Bascom was sentenced to up to five years behind bars during an emotional hearing Monday.

Fifteen-year-old Tommy Clark was walking alongside the road with a friend about 9 p.m. on Sept. 2 when Bascom's pickup truck drifted to the side and hit the teen. Clark was taken to the hospital and succumbed to his injuries the next day.

His father, Tom Lesser, brought a box of his son's ashes to the stand and told the court he cries over it.

Bascom's lawyer says his client's guilt over the crash has driven him to self-destructive behavior.
