JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A commercial ship has hit a major bridge in Jacksonville, forcing its closure into next week.

The ship hit the Mathews Bridge Thursday afternoon. The bridge is a major east-west artery.

Florida Department of Transportation spokesman Michael Goldman says the bridge has more than 56,000 vehicles drive on it each day.

Goldman says the bridge is closed for repairs through at least next Monday.

He says any traffic on the bridge could damage it further.
