SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Interstate 585 in Spartanburg has been shut down after a bridge over the highway was heavily damaged by a truck.

Authorities say a lift on the back of a flatbed truck slammed into the California Avenue bridge around 9 a.m. Monday, shifting the middle segment of the bridge about five feet.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation said I-585 will remain closed until the damaged bridge can be removed. That will take at least a day.

The bridge was built in 1957 and was scheduled to be replaced starting in September. Once the old bridge is removed, DOT will review its options on replacing the span.

The bridge has a clearance of 13 feet 10 inches, which is marked with several signs.

A detour has been set up.
