JACKSON, Miss. — The exit from northbound Interstate 55 to westbound Lakeland Drive will soon be shut down permanently.

MDOT spokesman Jarrod Ravencraft says the current ramp won't be closed until the new turn lane is built, and that access to St. Dominic Hospital and the University of Mississippi Medical Center will be maintained.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation will reroute traffic, combining exits for both directions of Lakeland. The state will add an additional lane to the current eastbound Lakeland ramp to allow westbound traffic to turn left.

Transportation commissioners approved the project Tuesday and MDOT will now take bids. The estimated $1.6 million project is scheduled for November completion.

More than 11,000 vehicles use the Lakeland exits each day. Ravenscraft says eliminating the ramp will make traffic on Lakeland safer.
