I-49 North closed as wintry weather nears

As the frigid weather nears, the department is urging motorists to stay off the roads unless necessary. If they are driving, officials ask that they use extra caution, reduce speeds, avoid driving while distracted and allow for extra driving time.

BATON ROUGE, La. — State transportation officials have closed both the northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 49 North, from Louisiana 1 to U.S. 71 in Caddo Parish ahead of a winter storm expected to spark significant ice accumulations on trees, power lines, bridges and overpasses.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for far east Texas and northwest Louisiana.

In addition, the state Department of Transportation and Development announced the closure of Benton Road (Louisiana 3) over the Kansas City Southern Railroad in Bossier Parish.
