House, Senate endorse Sakonnet toll hike delay

As a backup, the Newport rates would climb to $1.04 for cars with in-state transponders and $5 for others.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — House and Senate lawmakers have voted to push back the date on which Rhode Island's bridge authority can hike the 10-cent Sakonnet Bridge toll.

Both chambers approved legislation Thursday that would push the date from April 1 to May 15. Final, formal votes would send the measures to Gov. Lincoln Chafee.

The outcome is effectively moot. Anticipating General Assembly action, the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority board voted Wednesday to hike the Sakonnet toll effective May 16. If that increase is blocked, tolls on the Newport Bridge will go up instead.

The new approved Sakonnet rate is 50 cents for cars with Rhode Island E-ZPass transponders and $3.75 for others.

As a backup, the Newport rates would climb to $1.04 for cars with in-state transponders and $5 for others.
