The Cass Truckload Linehaul Index shows a 6.0 percent year-over-year increase in rates for March — the largest in 35 months.

The Index surpassed the 120 mark and set a new high, stated a Cass news release.

From February, line-haul rates were up 3.7 percent, an above-normal sequential  increase for the fourth straight month.

“Demand for freight transportation continues to improve while capacity shrinks as carriers continue to exit the marketplace,” reported the Index.

The cost of intermodal shipping also continues to rise, the Index stated, with March bringing a 1.8 percent upswing over March for the year prior, and a 2.5 percent increase from February.

Like the truckload index the intermodal index was at a new peak.

Transportation analysts at Avondale Partners said they expect that “domestic container shipments will grow at a high, single-digit rate in 2014, with particular strength in ‘local East’ shipments.”
