The Truckers for A Cause Chapter of A.W.A.K.E. will be having an educational conference call on Monday, April 28 at 7 p.m. central time for truck drivers about oral appliances for the treatment of sleep apnea.

Oral appliances (OA) are mouthpiece-type medical devices that juts the jaw forward keeping your airway open while you sleep. Currently FMCSA MRB guidance to medical examiners is to not certify drivers using oral appliances. TFAC-A.W.A.K.E. held an educational conference call hosted by Dr. Barbara Phillips, a former member of the FMCSA Medical Review Board, going over why OA’s are not recommended.

Since that call, Braebon a medical device company has developed a compliance monitoring chip that can be implanted in some OA’s. Also Public Law 113-45 (The Sleep Apnea in Transportation bill) passed by Congress last October specifically directed FMCSA to review alternative treatments.

For these reasons it’s time to take another look at oral appliances for truck drivers, the group’s leaders said.

The speaker will be Dr. Tara Griffin, a dental sleep medicine specialist from the Bloomington, Ill. area. She specializes in the treatment of sleep apnea using oral appliances. She has also been active with several Illinois trucking associations.

This is a free educational conference open to anyone interested in learning more about oral appliances.

To participate call: (209) 647-1600 and use code 128704.
