Soggy weather fails to dampen 32nd annual Shell ROTELLA SuperRigs

This year’s competition is being held at the Zmax Dragway, adjacent to the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Contestants can opt for a full weekend of beautiful trucks, followed by NASCAR Sprint Cup racing on Friday, a concert featuring Jake Owen and two performances by Train, followed by more racing as the NASCAR Sprint All-Stars take to the track on Saturday.

CONCORD, N.C. — The first day of judging at the 32nd annual  Shell ROTELLA SuperRigs competition opened to torrential rains and tornado warnings, followed by a parade of NASCAR Sprint Cup tractor-trailer rigs from the teams that would compete on Friday and Saturday.

Despite the weather, contestants lined up early to show off their work.

A full day of rain is expected to keep the turnout low for Thursday’s judging, as truck owners opt to wait for the sunshine predicted for Friday and Saturday. The SuperRigs contest is, however, a working truck competition and some of the contestants, with loads waiting, couldn’t wait for better weather.

The location does provide some benefits, however, as the registration and judging areas are under the cover of a pavilion and within smelling distance of Destination America’s Pitmasters specialized trailer, where the briskets are beginning to smoke already.

Watch this space for updates from the competition and early photos of some of the entrants.
