D'IBERVILLE, Miss. — The Mississippi Department of Transportation will shut down Interstate 110 for several nights in June to finish work on the drawbridge.

Interstate 110 is a north-to-south connector running from Interstate 10 to U.S. Highway 90 in Biloxi.

Transportation officials say in a news release that the work to modernize the mechanical, electrical and interior components to the drawbridge will require closing the bridge from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Officials said the work will be done at night to minimize delays.

The closing schedule includes:

— Monday, June 2 into Tuesday, June 3.

— Sunday, June 15 through Thursday, June 19.

— Sunday, June 22 through Thursday June 26 (if necessary).

Transportation officials are recommending motorists should use Mississippi Highway 609 and Mississippi 605 as alternate north/south routes between U.S. 90 and Interstate 10.

The project should be completed by July.

Southern Transportation Commissioner Tom King said the new technology will improve the long-term performance of the bridge.

"The I-110 drawbridge was in critical need of this technological update," he said in the news release. "This major renovation provides modern day technology to increase the dependability and safety of the 40-year-old drawbridge."
