MIAMI — A Miami-Dade police officer shot a man during a traffic stop on Interstate 75 near Miami Gardens Drive.

The shooting occurred late Sunday night as the officer was driving home from work.

Police say the officer, who is a 26-year veteran of the department, saw two speeding cars on northbound I-75. He conducted a traffic stop on one of the vehicles and signaled for the other vehicle to stop.

The second car pulled into the emergency lane and slowed down as he approached the police cruiser.

According to police the driver kept moving toward the officer, causing him to draw his weapon and fire. The 23-year-old driver was airlifted to a trauma center.
