SHOW LOW, Ariz. — A rest area between Globe and Show Low that has been closed for several years is set to reopen this fall.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says it is renovating the Salt River Canyon rest area along U.S. 60. New signs will go up, the parking lot will be paved, and the composting toilet system will be replaced.

The construction isn't expected to affect traffic on the highway.

The Transportation Department had shut down some rest areas across the state because of a lack of funding. Officials began setting aside money in 2011 for renovations and prioritized the projects.

The Salt River Canyon rest area will be maintained by a private entity through a partnership with the Arizona Department of Transportation.
