ELYRIA, Ohio  — As part of its ongoing efforts to educate the commercial vehicle industry about the benefits and importance of active safety technologies, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC recently collaborated with Volvo Trucks Canada to present the Volvo Trucks Canada Enhanced Technology Event.

The event, held Sept. 9-10 in Waterloo, Ontario, featured Bendix technology designed to mitigate rollovers and loss of control, help prevent rear-end collisions, monitor tire pressure and temperature, and reduce stopping distance.

Participants experienced the effectiveness of the innovative Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology (VEST) by Bendix, and Volvo Enhanced Cruise (VEC) by Bendix. Attendees also enjoyed static displays that presented VEST and VEC along with SmarTire by Bendix CVS tire pressure monitoring system, and Bendix air disc brakes and wide foundation drum brakes, according to Bendix officials.

Close to 100 industry members attended the event, held at the Waterloo Regional Emergency Services Training and Research Complex.

“As a North American leader in active safety and brake system technology, Bendix is committed to educating the industry about the technology’s potential to help prevent accidents, reduce injuries and save lives on roadways in Canada and all of North America,” Fred Andersky, Bendix director of marketing-controls, said. “We were pleased to partner with Volvo Trucks Canada, another company long committed to highway safety, for a second time to help industry members get an all-important firsthand view, including from the seat of a truck cab, of these vital technologies.”

Technologies featured in the demonstration included:

• Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology (VEST) by Bendix, a full-stability system that helps drivers mitigate rollover and loss-of-control situations on dry, wet, snow and ice-covered roadways.

• Volvo Enhanced Cruise (VEC) by Bendix, designed to help drivers avoid rear-end collisions by delivering proactive alerts and active interventions to help the driver maintain a safe following distance behind a forward vehicle.

• SmarTire by Bendix CVS, which monitors the pressure and temperature of each tire on a commercial vehicle to provide real-time, temperature-compensated tire pressure deviation information to the driver or maintenance technician

• Bendix air disc brakes and wide foundation drum brakes — Bendix ADB 22X air disc brakes and ES (Extended Service) foundation drum brakes — which meet or exceed the newly mandated reduced stopping distance regulations.

“These technologies, as proactive and effective as they can be, don’t replace the need for good drivers and safe driving practices, as well as continuous, comprehensive driver training,” Andersky said. “Active safety technologies won’t make a bad driver a good driver, but they can help a good driver avoid a bad situation.”
