Dana Holding Corporation announced today at the Technology & Maintenance Council’s 2013 Annual Meeting, three new products and advancements, including the Spicer AdvanTEK 40 tandem axle, a Spicer Life Series main driveshaft and inter-axle shaft, and that the Spicer Pro-40 tandem axle is now offered in the 2013 PACCAR data books for commercial vehicles under the Kenworth and Peterbilt nameplates.

The Spicer AdvanTEK 40 tandem axle is an all-new 40,000-lb. tandem axle for a variety of Class 8 applications. It features a market-leading design that increases fuel economy, improves reliability, reduces vehicle weight and decreases total ownership costs, said Pat D’Eramo, president of Dana Commercial Vehicle Driveline Technologies.

Compared with competitive tandem-axle offerings, the Spicer AdvanTEK 40 axle is estimated to deliver more than $8,000 in operating savings over a five-year period through a powerful combination of features including the industry’s fastest axle ratio of 2.26:1, lower axle weight, optimum inter-axle driveline angles, and reduced lubrication quantity.

“The Spicer AdvanTEK 40 axle represents the next generation of tandem axles designed for fleets looking to drive efficiency gains and increase their return on investment,” D’Eramo said. “We have engineered performance improvements into every aspect of the Spicer AdvanTEK 40 axle to quickly deliver significant benefits that extend to vehicle owners in the resale market, as well.”

The Spicer AdvanTEK 40 axle was developed with faster axle ratios to handle higher input torques, lowering engine rpm at cruise speed while increasing axle efficiency by up to 1.2 percent, D’Eramo said. The Spicer AdvanTEK 40 axle will be offered with ratios ideally suited for direct-drive transmission drivetrains requiring rear axle ratios from 2.26 to 2.79 and overdrive transmission drivetrain ratios from 2.93 to 3.91.

The Spicer AdvanTEK 40 axle is up to 21 pounds lighter than competitive 40,000-lb. tandem axles on the market today, D’Framo said. It is available with additional options such as Dana’s patented wheel differential locks, lubrication pump, breather and Spicer LMS and LMSi hubs. Other options include thick-wall housings and Dana’s SelecTTrac solution for maximizing GAWR rating for aluminum hubs and maximizing bearing life in single wide-based tire configurations.

Optimum inter-axle driveline angles allow for parallel axle installation, avoiding installation variables and vehicle issues with certain air-ride suspensions. Further refinements in the design of the Spicer AdvanTEK 40 axle deliver improved durability of U-joints, less vehicle downtime, and lower maintenance costs.

Dana will start production on Spicer AdvanTEK 40 axle in early 2014.





Dana debuted its Spicer Life Series main driveshaft and inter-axle shaft specifically designed to supply greater torque, durability and savings for severe-duty vocational applications as well as low-emission, high-efficiency trucks.

The latest in a fully upgraded line of Spicer heavy-duty universal joints, Dana offers standard service and extra heavy-duty versions of the SPL®-350 driveshaft, as well as the complementary SPL®-250 inter-axle shaft. Available in the second half of 2013, these additions to the Spicer family of heavy-duty U-joints extend the expected life of the drivetrain and eliminate application restrictions on engine power in today’s Class 8 linehaul and vocational vehicles.

The most robust heavy-duty driveshaft and inter-axle shaft in their classes, the SPL-350 driveshaft and SPL-250 inter-axle are designed to withstand the increased stress placed on the driveline by high-efficiency on-highway trucks, as well as severe vocational applications including heavy equipment, mining, oil fields, and road trains, D’Framo said.

“As vehicle manufacturers downspeed engines, torque demands on the rest of the drivetrain increase dramatically,” D’Eramo said. “These new, more robust driveshafts have been designed to provide the optimal combination of durability, size and weight needed to help heavy-duty truck owners maximize the productivity of their fleets.”

Delivering up to 35,000 Nm of torque capacity in a smaller, more lightweight package, the SPL-350 driveshaft and SPL-250 inter-axle shaft are equipped with high power density design features that extend product life and outperform competing driveshafts, D’Framo said. Like all Spicer heavy-duty U-joints, these products feature an optional service-free design for further maintenance and lifecycle benefits, more power density than competing products, and a 40 percent improvement in bearing life over competitive designs.

The SPL-350 driveshaft and SPL-250 inter-axle shaft are ideally suited for use with the Spicer AdvanTEK 40 tandem axle.

The Spicer Pro-40 family of heavy-duty 40,000-pound tandem drive axles supplies a reliable, lightweight option for linehaul, bulk, regional and city delivery fleets. It offers a dramatic weight reduction and improved power density, enabling customers to increase payload, improve fuel economy and ultimately improve their bottom line. The axle is nearly 100 pounds lighter than the nearest competitive axle, and now offers a new thinner wall version for further weight reductions on select applications, D’Eramo said.

Available in a wide range of ratios from 3.25 to 3.90, the Spicer Pro-40 axle is ideal for commercial trucks with nine-, 10-, 12- or 13-speed overdrive transmissions; diesel engines rated up to 475 horsepower and 1750 lb-ft. of torque; and gross combination weight ratings up to 80,000 lbs.

“Most of our competitors offer a single 40,000-pound tandem product that is designed to meet a broad spectrum of application requirements, but it is clear that one size is not the optimum solution for all,” D’Eramo said. “The Spicer Pro-40 axle offers a dramatic weight reduction because it allows customers to spec exactly what they need to maximize efficiency.”

The Spicer Pro-40 axle has been available to PACCAR customers by specific request since 2012. Popular among refrigerated fleets, bulk haulers, flat bed fleets, fuel haulers and dry van fleets, the Spicer Pro-40 axle joins a long list of advanced drivetrain products available through PACCAR data books, including Spicer steer and drive axles, driveshafts, tire-management solutions and low-maintenance wheel end offerings, D’Eramo said.
