New Kenworth T700 combines aero styling, spacious cab

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Twenty-five years after introducing over-the-road truckers to the benefits of streamlined tractors, Kenworth Truck Co. has unveiled its latest generation of aerodynamic advances with today’s introduction of the highly fuel-efficient Kenworth T700 at the annual Mid-America Trucking Show here.

The Kenworth T700 significantly advances that rich legacy by delivering excellent low cost operation, superior driver comfort, and modern styling, company officials said in presenting the new model at an industry press event.

“We’re extremely proud to introduce the Kenworth T700, the latest evolution of our industry-leading aerodynamic product line. We believe that the all-new, wide-cab T700 is truly the truck to beat when it comes to outstanding fuel efficiency results,” said Bill Kozek, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice president. “T700 customers also benefit from the new, efficient 2010 PACCAR MX engine with industry-leading one-million mile B10 life and superior power-to-weight performance; Kenworth NavPlus; spacious cab and sleeper; excellent serviceability; and best in class forward lighting.”

Designed through the extensive use of computational fluid dynamics, Kenworth engineers have optimized the aerodynamic integration of the Kenworth T700, while carefully sculpting a shapely and distinctive, eye-catching appearance, the company said.

“As a result, the T700 has the lowest aerodynamic drag of any Kenworth truck in our history,” said Preston Feight, Kenworth chief engineer.

The truck will replace the company’s T2000 tractor, and is designed for customers looking for a wider, more spacious cab than is offered by the T660.

“Adding the T700 to the Kenworth family lets us offer over the road customers two industry-leading aerodynamic choices, the T660 and the T700, to improve their bottom line, while keeping drivers satisfied mile after mile,” said Gary Moore, Kenworth assistant general manager for marketing and sales.

The grille, which carries the signature Kenworth family look, uses corrosion-resistant aluminum wire mesh and provides superior protection for cooling system components. The lightweight, durable and sloped aerodynamic hood consists of three pieces for easy repair and reduced downtime and cost. There is clear access to underhood components for quick and easy service and its ball-and-socket closing system ensures proper hood placement. To help maximize airflow, the aerodynamic high roof has flush-mounted LED marker lights and no exterior sunvisor.

The aerodynamic bumper and chassis fairings are made of a material that helps minimize fading and has improved impact resistance. Thermal Plastic Olefin (TPO) is UV stable in non-painted form, which allows Kenworth to offer the T700 bumper and fairings with painted and non-painted options. The light texture on the bumper and fairings is also designed specifically to reduce the visibility of small scrapes and scuffs.

The T700 provides best in class lighting down the road through standard Halogen projector headlamps and optional Xenon headlamps that respectively offer a 3-fold and 11-fold increase in bulb life compared to conventional sealed beams, according to Kenworth. LED turn signals are used.

The sleeper offers an 8-foot cathedral ceiling, which optimizes the work environment and provides more room to stretch out and relax. There’s even room to sit upright in the upper bunk. The T700 sleeper includes a 42-inch liftable lower bunk, pull-out desk, full-length door-enclosed hanging closet, array of storage choices, rich-looking wood grain accents, wall-to-wall carpet, and plentiful Xenon incandescent lighting bulbs for excellent illumination. Among optional amenities are a drawer-style refrigerator, and an adjustable flat panel TV mount to secure and view up to a 16-inch screen.

The cab has state-of-art multiplexed instrumentation, the Kenworth Driver Information Center and modern dash styling. The major feature is the new Kenworth NavPlus, the trucking industry’s first PC-based, in-dash system. The system includes true truck-specific navigation, vehicle data, hands-free phoning, audio controls, camera inputs, roadside assistance, and optional Internet access. Kenworth NavPlus is standard on T700 premium trim offerings and optional for all other trim levels.

The T700, which is standard with the 75-inch AERODYNE sleeper, targets line and regional haul fleets and team driver operations where driver comfort is especially important. The roomy interior provides an industry-leading 60-plus cubic feet of storage space, and nearly 25 percent more interior volume compared to a similarly specified Kenworth T660.  There is nearly 30 inches between the driver and passenger seats for convenient sleeper access.
