JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — An estimated gap in long-term funding made by Missouri's transportation department may not be accurate.
State auditor Susan Montee says in a report that the $18.7 billion shortfall was estimated without including inflation.
The audit also found the long-term projects listed in a 2008 transportation Missouri Department of Transportation report were not chosen using established procedures. And it says the department is overfunding expansion while underfunding road maintenance programs.
Montee's audit found the report was not approved by the state Highways and Transportation Commission.
The department says the report was designed to educate the public about transportation needs and the estimated shortfall was included to illustrate funding problems.
