PORTAGE, Ind.— Authorities have banned some tractor-trailers on the Indiana Toll Road because of snow and high winds accompanying the winter storm hitting the state.

Some lanes of toll road near the Portage exit were closed for a time Tuesday after two semis crashed. State police also reported several slide-offs and crashes on the highway.

The toll road operator banned double and triple trailers until 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Snowfall slowed in much of central and southern Indiana after several inches of snow fell earlier in the day. The National Weather Service forecast up to 8 inches of snow in parts of central Indiana, with a foot or more in northwestern Indiana, followed by possible drifting from wind gusts up to 40 mph.
