PHOENIX — Swift Transportation Co. promoted Scott Barker to vice president of driver engagement.

With nearly 40 years of experience, Barker brings a senior level of expertise in safety, training and development to the new role and years of developing initiatives that have directly impacted drivers and the industry, including leading the charge to make Swift a culture of safety, according to Deborah Owens, chief HR officer.

“Without our drivers, Swift cannot, and does not, exist,” Owens said. “We’re excited for Scott to become the voice of our more than 16,000 drivers nationwide, and to build that important bridge between them and driver support to positively impact their lives.”

Barker previously served as vice president of safety, driver recruiting and driver development for Swift Transportation, spearheading all aspects of safety, compliance, driver recruiting and development.

Preceding his work with Swift Transportation, Barker held several roles at UPS, starting his career as a package delivery driver and progressing to director of safety, west division, for UPS Freight.

In addition to his work experience, Barker serves as a member of various professional affiliations, including the National Safety Council and the American Society of Safety Engineers, and also participates in several volunteer leadership roles within the trucking industry.

“Truck drivers are instrumental in the way that America moves,” Barker said. “I feel honored to deliver a better life for our drivers across the country.”
