LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With the BlueCool Thermal Storage APU, Webasto pioneered the use of Cold Energy Storage in the Global Truck Market. Now Webasto takes the technology one step further with BlueCool Hybrid, the first ever Thermal Storage APU with Shore Power Connection. Fleets and owner-operators can have year ‘round bunk comfort and cab electrification without idling, Webasto representatives said at the Mid-America Trucking Show here.
It has the following features:
• Cools the bunk without using fuel or creating emissions
• CARB approved and EPA SmartWay verified
Unlimited Cooling and Comfort for Extended Stays
• Delivers maximum cooling performance without
diminishing over time
• System can be charged and discharged simultaneously Hotel Load, and
• Provides in-cab power for drivers to use 120 Volt appliances.
“Because it uses electricity from and land-based source, BlueCool Hybrid can produce cool air indefinitely, unlike most battery-powered systems that need to be recharged by the engine after a single rest period,“ said John Thomas, general manager of Webasto's commercial vehicle division.
“Plus, it can deliver AC power for standard household appliances, including laptops and other sensitive electronics without having to use an inverter or the vehicle's electrical system.“
When the system detects an outside power source it switches to “shore power“ mode. Electricity from the grid powers the outlets in the bunk, a battery charger to ensure the battery has sufficient voltage to start the behicle, and the compressor for Webasto's BlueCool Thermal Storage unit.
The BlueCool Thermal Storage APU runs independently of the OE air conditioning system and can charge and discharge simultaneously while conntected to shore power.
The BlueCool Hybrid APU can operate without shore power, keeping the bunk area cool for up to 10 hours by using energy that was stored during highway operation. It also can be combined with a Webasto Air Top 2000 ST heater for a complete auxiliary climate control system.
“The BlueCool Hybrid APU helps fleets and owner-operators take advantage of an emerging market for cost-effective, idle-free power,“ said Thomas, “whether it's at a truck stop, private terminal location or the truck operator's driveway.“
