Zollars says Yellow Roadway looking at China opportunities

WASHINGTON — Yellow Roadway has a goal to be the first American trucking firm to operate in China, CEO Bill Zollars told the Financial Times in an interview on May 16.

He told the publication that his company was conducting talks with a small number of Chinese truck operators that Yellow could either acquire or work with in joint ventures.

He said Yellow would target its service at U.S. companies, such as Wal-Mart and Home Depot, which import increasing large quantities of goods from China.

“Wal-Mart and Home Depot have no reliable transportation partner to get goods from a manufacturing plant or distribution center to the ports,” Zollars told FT. “There is a tremendous strategic opportunity for us to fill that gap.”

The first deal with a Chinese company could come within three weeks, Zollars said.

He noted that China's truck market is highly fragmented with no company owning more than 200 trucks.
