HOUSTON — Houston's Metropolitan Transit Agency estimates drivers who don't pay for using carpool and toll lanes managed by the agency have racked up some $740,000 in unpaid tolls but acknowledge there's no system in place to collect from the scofflaws.
The Houston Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1aBbzjY) officials say they're working on ways to enforce collections but have been focusing first on rules and policies related to the roads.
METRO manages five segments of Houston freeways. On Monday, rates went up to use the carpool and toll lanes during peak traffic periods.
The company that manages the toll lane system notifies drivers after three violations in a year and requests payment. But the agency's interim chief executive officer, Tom Lambert, says some "next steps" are needed to be put in place.
