SENECA COUNTY, N.Y. — One person is dead after a crash in New York involving an 18-wheeler.
The New York State Police (NYSP) in Waterloo are investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision that occurred on Friday morning, at approximately 8:55 a.m. on State Route 414 in the town of Tyre, Seneca County.
NYSP’s investigation, according to the agency’s press release, determined that a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox, operated by an 16-year-old male, from Clyde, N.Y., was traveling southbound on State Route 414 when, on a slight curve in the roadway, the vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a 1985 Peterbilt semi-tractor operated by Nelson S. Sensenig, 48, of Romulus, N.Y.
Sensenig attempted to avoid the collision and applied his brakes but was unable to do so. He was not injured in the crash.
The sole occupant of the Chevrolet Equinox was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Members of the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit (CVEU) conducted a post-crash inspection of the tractor-trailer, which was hauling an empty trailer. The driver of the tractor-trailer was evaluated at the scene and showed no signs of alcohol or drug impairment.
The investigation is continuing.
